Mariah found Ivan the Terrible/Mrs. Doubtfire today. He was in the back corner of the yard, missing a head, with a big hole in one side. To me, his condition is basically conclusive of what happened: the storms came, he freaked out and flew over the fence, and got mauled by a dog. The owner later threw his body over the fence. Mariah thinks that his resting position makes that unlikely, but she admits that we had previously checked the spot where she found him. Regardless, we now know what we already knew: out accidental rooster is dead, only days after Snowflake. We are now down to the two least interesting chickens of the flock.

I feel extra guilty. I was really angry with him for letting Snowflake die. I felt like it was his job to defend the flock, and he should have fought the dogs to let the others escape. But Ivan wasn't a fighter, he was a fleer.

A really sad part is that, knowing we had all these fertilized eggs, Mariah bought an incubator. She really wanted to hatch Snowflake's last eggs. I am not sure that they were even fertilized; I never saw Ivan mating with Snowflake, and I think it somewhat unlikely since she was basically co-alpha. The other eggs are probably not going to hatch either, even the ones that were probably fertilized, because of the ice storm. She is really upset that the rooster died right when she was ready to hatch some chicks.
