my computer has a problem. this problem is annoying.

the wireless adapter doesn't work.

rather, the adapter works fine, but windows won't seem to use it.

I installed the adapter to my computer, which was running windows 2000. I install the adapter, it works great. I restart, and it won't work anymore. I look at the IP address, and it's 169...., so it's not even trying to talk to the router. the status is "connected," and the connection is "very good," but it just won't seem to work.

so I upgrade to xp. I had similar problems with my old 2000 install on my laptop, so I figured it was a good place to start, especially since upgrading from a 6-year-old operating system isn't a bad idea anyway. the upgrade itself was a bit of a hassle, but eventually came out fine. then--still no internet.

I tried simply "repairing" the connection, but it said "the following action failed: renewing the IP address." then, when I actually disabled and enabled the connection, the adapter connected and had an IP address of 192,168.0.5. I restarted the computer to see what happens, and it's the same problem again.

I don't know what could cause this problem, so I'd appreciate any suggestions.

EDIT: update: now, when I reboot, it starts out saying that the IP is 192.168.0.5, but otherwise the behavior is identical to what is described above.
