the things that make other things better
Aug. 20th, 2008 11:59 amDear LJ,
I'm thinking about condiments. I realized that I did not actually know what made a condiment a condiment, as opposed to a sauce, or a seasoning, or an ingredient. Here's what wikipedia says:
A condiment is a prepared edible substance or mixture, often preserved or fermented, that is added in relatively small quantities, most often at the table, to make food more suitable to the diner's taste.
So that's helpful. I was thinking about condiments that I use regularly. Here's a list of some:
ketchup
mayonnaise
dijon mustard
sriracha
fish sauce
vinegars
soy sauce
hot sauce
salsa
relish/chutney
sour cream
barbecue sauce
worcestershire sauce
tzatziki sauce
I also use variations on these, like flavored mayo (aioli, spicy mayo, etc), cocktail sauce (ketchup with lemon and horseradish), etc.
My top 3 are probably sriracha, ketchup, and sour cream. Please share your favorites!
